July 14 – July 16 White Water Rafting Overnight Trip
We will leave NW Harley-Davidson the morning of July 14 at 8:00, ride to Leavenworth and spend some time in the German village. We will depart to Wenatchee to spend the night at the Comfort Inn staying July 14 & 15. Saturday evening we will have dinner at Bob’s Classic Dinner. Rafting will be on Sunday. Chinook Expeditions will provide security for our bikes during rafting and will provide lunch on the river. After rafting some Wenatchee friends, Bert’s sister Theresa, husband Sam, Mark and Kathy will provide us with a BBQ. We will need to donate some dollars to assist them with the cost. We had an awesome time last year at the BBQ. We will then have a leisurely ride home on Monday.
Chinook Expeditions will host the rafting ride. The cost of the rafting ride is $90.00 per person. Chinook Expeditions requires a 50% down payment a minimum of 45 days prior to the rafting ride to ensure that he has enough guides to accommodate our group. Please give me your down payment as soon as possible and I will pass it on to Chinook Expeditions.
Don Dahl will lead a non-chapter ride on Sunday for wine tasting if you do not want to raft. So if you don’t like the water you can sample some awesome wines from Eastern Washington!

August Overnighter is the “Scenic Ride to Silverdale” and will be Sat Aug 11th – Sun Aug 12th
We will leave NWHD at 8:00 am – expect an all day ride with lunch at about noon and other rest stops along the way. We will arrive at the hotel about 5:00-ish and there is a restaurant in the hotel where we will have dinner. There is also a lounge so once we park the bikes and check in there is no need to go out again – we can relax and party and whatever! The ride home Sunday is not as long and will include lunch. We will have breakfast in the hotel (NOT included in your hotel room price).
We are staying at the Silverdale Beach Hotel. There are 10 rooms on hold under “SSHOG0812”. The hotel is full other than our 10 rooms on hold, which we were able to get only when someone else cancelled their hold! So I suggest if you plan to go call now to reserve your room. Currently the only rooms they were able to hold for us are kings. I have requested that if any double queens come available to include those in our hold, but no guarantee. Rooms are $110 + tax. Phone # is: 360-698-1000.
Backup hotel is the Oxford Inn – oxfordinnsilverdale.com or 800-273-5076. Rooms there are close to $100 and I am not sure what will be available for how long.
Please email me and let me know once you make your room reservation so I can keep track of how many rooms we have left. Thank you! Gail – This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Note: You may get a cheaper rate with a military discount at the Silverdale Beach Hotel, rather than using the SSHOG rate.

Common Questions and Answers from H.O.G.® Officer Training 2010(Excerpt from the Chapter Officer News, Spring 2010 Edition)
Q:If a member belongs to more than one chapter and is entered in a Chapter Challenge, which chapter gets the points/credit? A:Often when a H.O.G. chapter or dealership has an Open event and other H.O.G. chapters attend, they often include a H.O.G. Chapter Challenge. Most conduct it the simply way:The chapter with the most members wins, as tabulated via sign-up sheets for each chapter. But consider that some people may belong to more than one chapter. The individual with multiple chapter memberships must choose which chapter they’re with that day.In other words, they can only sign in for one chapter. The same applied if the Chapter Challenge winner is determined via points gained by winning field events or poker runs, etc.Again, any member that belongs to multiple chapters may only represent one of their chapters for the day.
Q:Are 50/50 fund-raisers legal? A:Fund-raisers such as 50/50s, poker runs, and raffles are typical ways that chapters raise funds, and prizes (including cash) are usually associated with these activities. It’s important to know that many states regulate gaming activities, and there may also be some extra financial reporting required. If your chapter decides to do these types of fund-raisers, you need to be aware of the following:
Q:How much control does the sponsoring dealer have over the chapter? If someone didn’t purchase a bike from them, can the dealer not allow them to be in the chapter? How many chapters can a dealer have? A: A sponsoring dealer of a H.O.G. chapter is the “owner” of that chapter. As indicated in the Annual Charter for H.O.G. Chapters, the dealer has the authorization to eliminate or allow a membership of that chapter for any reason. The Charter also indicates that a dealer can only have one chapter per dealership. If the dealer also owns a secondary retail outlet (SRL), that location may also have a chapter at the dealer’s discretion.
Q:How long do you need to keep release forms and chapter enrollment and release forms? Is it legal to scan and keep electronically? A:Any legal document, including releases, and the annual Chapter Membership Enrollment Form and Release should be kept for seven years. The original forms should be kept, not a scanned version. It is recommended that chapter archives be housed at the sponsoring dealership. As volunteers and officers, a member may stay involved in the chapter for years, but what if they don’t?What if your secretary has been keeping your chapter archives at his or her house, and decides to leave the chapter? What if the house burns to the ground?Ask your sponsoring dealer if they have a safe storage area for the legal records you’re required to keep.
Q:How much training do Road Captains need, and can there be special requirements such as first aid and accident scent management class completion? A:There is no training required by National H.O.G. to be a Road Captain.Keep in mind that the position of Road Captain doesn’t include leading rides, although most Road Captains do lead rides. The real consideration is ride leaders (you don’t have to be a Road Captain to lead a ride).Chapters can look at having requirements to lead rides, provided those requirements are approved by the sponsoring dealer. However, when you’re looking at ride leader training, don’t get carried away. Also, if you’re going to require training that isn’t free, who’s going to pay for it?Keep in mind that chapter officers are volunteers.Training such as first aid and accident scene management are good skills to have, but the first concern is making sure the ride leader knows how to lead a group ride.Resources such as the Rider’s Edge®/MSF Group Riding video is a good start.
Q:How do we disengage an unsafe rider from the group? A:It really depends on what the unsafe act is.If the act is a hazard to the group, the group should be pulled over as soon as possible. However, when the ride leader does talk to the rider it should be done with no more than the ride leader and the sweep rider present.Find out what the problem is any why the unsafe act occurred.Remember, praise in public and criticize in private. If the ride leader is aware that a person demonstrated unsafe acts previously or is impaired in any manner, the rider should be talked to privately prior to the group leaving on the ride. The dealer should always be advised of any unsafe riders, what happened, and what action was taken.
Q:Does our chapter need bylaws? A:There are two kinds of bylaws;those required for incorporation, and those that identify chapter operations and procedures. For chapter operations and procedures, you’re not required to have bylaws.Keep it simple and use the Annual Charter for H.O.G. Chapters as your guide. If your chapter decides to have bylaws, they can’t infringe on the Annual Charter for H.O.G. Chapters, and must be approved by both the sponsoring dealer and H.O.G. Regional Manager.Copies of the chapter’s bylaws are kept on file in Milwaukee.
Q:We have a member in our chapter who doesn’t own a bike anymore, but he’s a Life Member in National H.O.G.Is it okay for him to remain in the chapter? A:A life, full, or Associate member in National H.O.G. is eligible to join a local chapter even if they don’t currently own a bike. However, per the Charter, Article VI-Membership, the dealer dictates membership policy for his or her local chapter.Check with your sponsoring dealer. If the dealer deems it acceptable, the member would still need to sign a release form to join the local chapter.
Q:We have a member who doesn’t have a H-D® bike, but he wants to be a Road Captain. Can he? A:As with any issue in your chapter, this is up to your sponsoring dealer. In most cases we’ve heard about, dealers are pretty adamant that anyone leading a ride or holding an office in a chapter MUST have a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle, and they should be riding that bike during he rides. This is, after all, a HARLEY Owners Group.
Q:At our dealer’s open house, several 1% motorcycle club members showed up.How should we handle it? A:How to handle any situation, whether at the dealership or at a chapter activity, is up to the dealer. You can certainly bring the situation to the dealer’s attention, but it’s the dealer who has to determine if this is something that requires some type of action or not.Riders wear a lot of things on their jackets and vests. If a person is enjoying the event along with everyone else, regardless of what patches they’re wearing, then let them enjoy the event. They may be customers of the dealer, just like you are.
Q:Why do newsletters need to be password protected on our Website? Why can’t advertising be allowed? A:Your chapter newsletter is a benefit of membership that’s paid for by your chapter members. When you place it online, you’re offering up the newsletter to be viewed by anyone around the world who didn’t pay for that benefit. This is the reason it needs to be password protected. We’re often asked, “How come we have to have it password protected online but the dealer can hand it out at the store?”The answer to that is because it is assumed to be a one-on-one relationship at the dealer level. The dealer is sharing with a potential new chapter member one on one. It’s also a limited number of copies, not infinite. The Web, however, isn’t one on one; it’s to the masses, and you’re opening up the newsletter to everyone with Web access – not just potential chapter members. Advertising on Websites:We review the chapter guidelines each year. We’ll be taking this under advisement and may look to alter them in the future to allow advertising only if the sponsoring dealer approves. We’ll keep you posted as we discuss and look into this further. |
