MOTORCYCLING SAFELY THROUGH 2 LANE ROUNDABOUTS
For more safe riding tips check out the Ride Captains Page as well as the Safety Officers Page. SSHog and its riders are in no way responsible for injury or accidents created by this information. If you do not feel safe riding this way please do not. It is for information purposes only.
According to the City of Lacey Website, “Roundabouts are safe, efficient, and less costly” alternatives to the more familiar controlled intersections that use traffic lights and designated turn lanes. “Roundabouts reduce traffic congestion by providing smoother traffic flow through an intersection and reduce the number of major accidents.” Over the past couple of years, I have heard of several accidents in roundabouts involving motorcycles. You probably know a fellow rider that has been in one. While a low speed crash in a cage usually results in a fender bender and the slight elevation of blood pressure on the part those involved, that same low speed crash on a motorcycle can result in a very serious injury and considerable damage to your motorcycle.
The City of Lacey has assured me that the local law enforcement agencies are issuing traffic tickets to those who are at fault when an accident occurs, as they should. However, if you are lying in the hospital after having your bike and you scattered around a roundabout that ticket the person gets is not going to mean a whole lot to you. Here is the proper way to travel through a 2-lane roundabout: When you are riding with a group the entire group should be in single file. Each rider is responsible for his or her own personal safety. In other words, proceed ONLY when it is safe to do so, yield or stop when you need to and proceed only when YOU feel it is safe. If we are split up, we will regroup at a safe location after the roundabout. Obey the posted speed limit (or less). Get in the correct lane early. Observe pavement markings and signs. All vehicles entering the roundabout are required to yield to the vehicles that are already in the roundabout.Use the right lane to turn at the first right or go straight. Use the left lane to go straight, make a left turn, or make a U-turn. Give large trucks (with long trailers) room to take up both lanes as they approach, circulate and exit the roundabout. Yield to ALL traffic already in the roundabout, even if you are only entering the right lane (or outside lane) of the roundabout. NEVER pass or change lanes in the roundabout. When exiting from the inside lane, ALWAYS check the lane next to you and your blind spots to make sure the outside lane is clear. Use your turn signal to let other drivers know that you are exiting. Watch a 10-minute video on roundabout. For more information, contact The City of Lacey Public Works Department:360 491-5600 publicworks@ci.lacey.wa.us
